I mentioned that I never got any of the stimulus checks ... See More because my dad still claims me on his taxes. She was shocked and said that was ridiculous and I’d need to change that right away.

For context: I still live at home bc I am a student and can’t afford to move out yet even with a full time job. I do not pay for any insurance, but I pay for everything else. Additionally, I’m saving up for a car and once I can buy one it’s going to be in my name and I’ll be paying the insurance for it.

I asked my dad to explain why he still claims me on his taxes (bc I don’t know anything about taxes and I was curious) and he got defensive and said: are you 25? To which I replied no. Then he said: that’s why. Not much of an explanation

Also, my dad still claims my older sister who is 24. She lives on her own, has a full time job, pays for her phone, and has a car in her name that she pays entirely for.

Can someone explain the basics of tax claims to me and if it’s good that my dad still claims me and my sister or if it’s bad. Thanks!

Employer missed spouses short term disability payments and is asking for money back from makeup payments. - My spouse was out of work for about 2 months on short term disability over the summer. During that time her employer didn't pay her for an entire month. This was after the ... See More waiting period ended. Later after looking at bank deposits we communicated with the disability insurance company and they made what appeared to be makeup payments. Now her employer is telling her that they overpaid and we need to pay them back 1000.00+.
It seems that the makeup payments worked out to the correct amount to cover the 4 weeks previously missed. How do we determine what if anything is owed back to the employer?

Edit 1: My spouses short term disability insurance is provided by her employer.
When she was out, she recieved no payments directly from an insurance company, only from her employer.
She recieved pay for the first two pay periods after her short term disability started, then no pay for two pay periods, then some pay again. Also worth noting, we contacted the insurance company when we saw a gap in payment.

Just because you have every dollar allocated out of your bank account at the end of the pay period doesn’t mean you’re PC2PC if half of that allocation is going to a variety of savings accounts. Someone transferred more than $64k from my mom's checking account to a stock company. What exactly should we do? - Hi, this morning my mom was checking her Bank of America app to see if she received a deposit she was expecting but she saw that there was a transaction ... See More from yesterday that totaled more than $64k to a stock company called "TD AMERITRADE DES". She has never heard of this company nor knows anything about stocks/investing, so this was definitely not her. Also, this is an incredible amount of money and is more than half of her total savings. She immediately called customer service and spoke to someone in Spanish (English is not her first language) who told her they would freeze her checking account (not savings) and they will investigate the fraud. She also told her that there was nothing she should be doing but since this is basically my mom's life savings, I think it would be crazy not to. My mom asked her why she didn't receive any alert for this transaction since it's a huge amount and the rep had the audacity to tell her "You have the app on your phone? You can check your transactions yourself". This all just happened and my mom is an absolute mess right now and I want to do everything I can to help make sure she gets her money back asap. What exactly should we do next?

EDIT: Wanted to add that she did in fact set up alerts and her other accounts (savings, credit, and debit) still have their alerts on. It was just the checking that seems to have alerts disabled which she didn’t realize until today.

Also, should we file a police report?

EDIT 2: Thank you to everyone who offered advice! I called back BofA to make sure we had the investigation/case #, then called TD Ameritrade to tell them about the situation. Unfortunately, like some of you predicted, they weren't able to confirm anything with me because of security reasons, which I understand. However, they did search if there was any account with my mom's name and zip code or SSN and they told me there wasn't. This was what I was expecting anyway, since on the transaction there is a name there and she doesn't have any association with TD.

Since they couldn't really say if there was/wasn't an account with the information I gave them, I don't know if it's flagged for fraud or anything like that. I stressed to them that I wanted them to prevent that account from being able to do any more damage, so hopefully they understand.

We also did file a police report, changed her passwords to everything, made sure she had 2FA, transferred her money to another account, canceled her cards, documented everything ourselves and we should be getting complete documentation of everything happening from her bank in the mail. A lot of people mentioned filing a complaint with CFPB but I'm not sure if we should do that now or if a few days go by without any action or notification.

Other than that, I think we've done most of the things people suggested we do in this situation and like some said, we now need to wait and let the bank handle/investigate it. The people I did speak with yesterday said it was likely she'd get her money back but we won't believe that until we see it. Thank you again to everyone who gave helpful advice!!

He took off 2 weeks for paternity leave, then periodically would use his PTO for doctor appointments, etc. His boss wasn't happy and gave him a final warning last month about his absences, and then my husband voluntarily switched to part time (I WFH, full-time, very demanding legal job).

Wednesday night at 1am we had to take our cat to the emergency 24/7 vet. Didn't get home until nearly 4am. Husband works at 7am. He told his boss, who said it was fine, then today he was fired for attendance.

I've already taken the following steps:

\- student loan IDR recalculation

\- canceled all subscriptions, e.g. Netflix

\- looked into WIC (we now qualify, I have an appointment in two weeks)

I'm assuming he doesn't qualify for unemployment since he was terminated for cause.

We have about $2000 in our emergency fund. I make $65k salary, which translates to $1700ish every two weeks. Our expenses are $900 rent, $350 car insurance, $80 renters insurance, $80 internet, $80 cell phone bill, $70 pet insurance, $70 medical bills, $200 his car loan. When student loans kick back in, I currently am set to pay $270 a month, but I just put in for that to be recalculated.

I use YNAB religiously. I'm hoping he gets a job quick, but neither of us have been fired before and I don't know how to handle the situation when it comes up in interviews.

Is there anything else we should be doing or anything else I missed?

**EDIT:** I'm getting a lot of comments, and frankly that's overwhelming. I'm grateful for all the comments - helpful or otherwise - and I may not have replied but I read every single comment. To repeat a couple things I've said in the comments:

* His ex-employer was less than 50 people. He did not qualify for FMLA.
* The two weeks paternity leave was company policy, not FMLA.
* My husband chose to attend baby's doctor appointments, her radiology appointments and her procedures. I was at every one of these appointments. I did not make him go. I did not twist his arm and force him to go. He chose to go to these appointments.
* Yes my car insurance rate is higher than Snoop Dogg. I live in Michigan. I am shopping around for better rates.
* I do not pay utilities. I am in a house, not an apartment. I just pay rent, to my mother-in-law, who owns the home. She pays for all utilities.
* I am still waiting for the claim to process from the emergency vet, so I do not know how much I'm getting back from pet insurance.
* My car is a 2017 Ford Fusion, he has a 2016 Ford Focus.
* We did not both go to the vet. I worded it poorly and I'm sorry for the confusion. He took the cat to the vet because he was able to catch her, and I was a blubbering, emotional mess and was scared to drive in my emotional state. I stayed at home with baby.
* He is applying for unemployment anyway. Worth a shot.

Throw away, of course. I'm 38m, active duty military. For the past 10 years, my wife has been in charge of all the financials. She had a general power of attorney so she could handle things while I was deployed ... See More multiple times. I rarely spend/spent a lot of money, and would just ask if a purchase was "ok". I stress easily and was happy to let her handle everything.

My wife passed away, unexpectedly, last month. This leaves me and my 11 year old, special needs, child at home. After a month, I have finally been able to piece together the nightmare that is the financial situation she left me. I'm torn between grief and anger at this point. Bottom lines:

~29k in credit card dept (3 cards, all maxed)
~12k in unsecured debt (3 personal loans with our bank and 3 loans through Affirm)
2 cars, selling hers next week, around 8k left on mine.
~560k left on mortgage, home worth around 700k

I went to NFCU this afternoon to discuss options. Bottom line was two fold. Consolidation loan wont work, she tanked both of our credit scores and we just won't qualify. Home equity wont work, as our current 3% rate will spike to at least 7% with the current rates and my credit score.

Not to mention I no longer have her income.

Not sure what to do, or even what direction to look in. More then happy to provide more details if anybody can offer advice.
