I asked the owner how they manage to keep the costs low in the current inflationary environment and he responded that he carries the costs by operating on reduced profit margins because the locality mainly consists of low socio-economic families. He expressed concern that many of his customers may not have a place for a night out if he increased his prices.

I just thought that was an incredibly thoughtful thing to do.

How do gas and electricity retailers differentiate a commodity product? What is the argument for privatising a commodity if there is zero ability to add value or differentiate offers? - At least with the NBN there are speed tiers so I can see value in paying more for faster connections.

Basically nobody uses cash any more, the residual few are worried about "privacy / security concerns". (i.e. probably mostly the ATO finding out about how well their business actually does!)
