My uncle suddenly found a trust fund, and I'm almost certain my father is being scammed - I'll attempt to keep this brief, but there's a fair bit of detail.

My father recently contacted me to let me know my uncle found a trust fund he had forgotten about years ago, ... See More and it's now worth an enormous amount of money (tens of millions of dollars). He's asking my father to fly to New York with him to help deal with paperwork and whatnot for it and to start the process of collecting the money.

The proof for this that my uncle has is that he was contacted by many lawyers, had his identity verified in many different ways (including a 3D scan and a blood test), and they confirmed he was the owner of this trust fund, and effectively all the money is his. However, he's stating that he was recently robbed, and needs a few thousand dollars to get him to the end of the month so that he and my father can fly to New York soon to get the money.

On top of all this, my uncle used to own an insurance company decades ago, but was caught misusing the money (I was very young at the time, so I don't know details), and the company had to close.

My father and uncle are both physically disabled, so they're asking me to fly to New York with them to help with the process, help organize things, carry things, etc. They're also wanting me to quit my job so I can help with managing the money, with the promise of at least doubling my salary (although I have no background or any idea in managing anything like that).

My father is trying to bring me into the mix, and has so many grand plans for what they'll do with the money, houses they'll buy, business ventures to do, etc. However, all of this just sounds like the Nigerian Prince scam (promise loads of money in exchange for a bit of money now), so naturally I'm beyond skeptical.

Just wondering if anybody has any advice on finding proof for this kind of thing. Even if all that can be done is finding enough proof that I can save my father from losing all his savings being scammed by his brother. Thanks!

tl;dr - My uncle needs some money now to make us rich later. How can I prove to my father that this isn't actually true?

Edit: I appreciate all the confirmation here. My real main goal is just helping my dad see it as well. He's already lost in fantasies of having a big home and such.

I think I'm going to ask for copies of documentation from lawyers, ask about why my uncle didn't just get a credit card or loan until the end of the month, etc. as some guidance for my father (just hoping to peacefully help him realize he's being ripped off). If he doesn't budge, I'll just call my uncle directly and be clear.

Edit 2: I talked to my family about this a bit just to help them be wary if my uncle or father asks anybody else for money. My father has kept a lot of the details from everybody about this money, and basically confirmed to them all the money was a guaranteed thing, so there was a lot of letdown when I explained the details.

I asked for the documents from my father about this, and he said he'd have them July 8 (which I'd say just gives more time for my uncle to ask for money before it's revealed to be a ruse). He also states he's happy to help family, which is why he would never question why my uncle needed the loan from him rather than getting one from the bank (or a credit card or anything). I'm going to bring up a few more of the things here, though (What are they comparing the 3D scan to? Do we have a copy of it? Why wasn't this just any standard situation of finding a beneficiary? Etc.).

My father and uncle are in their mid 60s or so, and my father has spoken to him on the phone, so he's at least reasonably certain it's my uncle (they last spoke in-person a year or so ago, so it's at least likely my uncle; my father would know his voice, I think). It's possible my uncle is the one being scammed and then just lying to save face and passing on the fees to family and such, but it's hard to say. It's at least a scam is all.

So, long story short, my sister took my social security number when I was 18 and opened a light bill in my name for ... See More her apartment. I knew nothing about credit, she came to me saying she needed a favor that I couldn’t tell anyone and said she needed my SS to open a light bill. She said it wouldn’t be permanent and she’d never mess up my credit. I felt bad when she said my niece and nephew couldn’t watch TV. I realize now I was being manipulated by someone I thought I could trust. I ended up telling my mom because I hate lying to her. She freaked and made me call my sister to tell her not to do it. My sister went ahead and did it anyways, she impersonated me to the light company.

She never paid the bill and let it go up $4k. She played it off like she was paying it the whole time. It eventually became a huge argument once I did know and she refused to pay it. I live in an abusive household, and by that time I was ready to move out but she still had the account in my name. She said she’d pay it when she could and when she felt like it. I knew that wasn’t going to happen.

She got assistance from some sort of program and got it bumped down to $2k. But she still wasn’t paying it. She told me if I closed the account, it would get sent to collections, and that her debt would be completely on me. I still closed it. Once it was sent to collections, I begged and pleaded with her to call them and just say it’s her debt. I did the same before I closed the account.

I did an Identity Theft thing with the light company. And a police report. Both told me this was a civil matter because she’s my sister and I technically gave her permission. She told me police and court don’t scare her and that she’d show the text message of me sending it to her.

I wanted to take it to court. I know nothing about that either. I was told all I can do is pay it and sue her for the amount. They can’t force a third party to remove it from my credit. I was just told I can contact the collections company and say it’s not my debt and provide proof like me never living at the address on the bill and things like that. Is that true? Would I even stand a chance? I’m 23, I don’t want that on my credit. It’s so frustrating to know she put me in this debt that really belongs to her.

I’ve frozen my credit since then because she still has it. I feel hopeless, pretty much.

Dealership wants me to come resign papers - Bought a truck on 5/20. Dealership called me on 6/14 and said there was an error on my loan app and the bank denied it. But they got me new financing which is 5 dollars less a month.

So, the title explains it all. A few years ago I (24f) was doing a favor for my mother who is generally not a very good mom. At the time she had moved into her own apartment with my younger siblings, and I was freshly moved out (which was sort of an emergency move out that I wasn't fully prepared for). Long story short, she asked me one day to take her to pick up her wifi router from \*a pretty popular company.\*

I hardly remember any of it because it's been years. To sum everything up, she was putting her internet/cable bill in my name without me understanding that was what was happening. Now, I have a letter from a collections agency saying I owe 500 dollars.

I'm just not sure what to do. I have a nice job, but it is enough to just barely get me by. My credit score is already not great because another member of my family is doing my wrong with a shared car payment we have. I don't want my record to be even more messed up. My mom will not give me the money, I know that for a fact.

Would it be smart to contact the collections agency and ask to do a payment plan? Would that still hurt my credit regardless? Or is there options to transfer this to her name. I can pay the money, I understand that I agreed to this and I have to face those consequences regardless of how little I understood. I just want to know what the best option is to not ruin my credit report.

Bank employee told my friend how much money is in my account. - I've had an inkling for sometime but this week I confirmed it. Is this legal. I do not like it.

Gf switched from salary to hourly. - My gf is a director at a child care center in PA, USA. She was originally salaried for $45,448 a year salary. Recently she was moved from salary to hourly @ $21.85 an hr. Which works out to the same amount she made ... See More on salary. The weird part is they would have to pay her more because she works a lot of overtime. They said there would be no cutting of hours, no changes to benefits, basically it would all stay the same. Their reason given was they had to make changes in the company and restructure. Why would they do this? from what I understand (which isn't much) they would now have to pay her overtime vs not paying overtime when she was salaried. Even if they make it so she only works works 40hrs a week she would make the same amount for less work. I just can't wrap my head around the reasoning behind this.

When is the right time to buy a home? - Hi All,

So I am a 24M living on my own and working in the IT sector. I net on a monthly basis around 3k$ after taxes. My expenses are around 2k$ a month including rent food and all the other ... See More stuff. On average I can save between 1k and 800$ per month. I already have savings of around 30k$ since I've been working for 4 years now.

I have the option now to purchase real estate because the average apartment in my area would cost me around 200-220k$. My current rent is 990$. My options with the bank are a 25 year mortgage with a 10% downpayment at 3.5% interest which will probably cost my entire savings to execute the move and maintain some cash buffer. I can borrow a bit from family if really needed so I have a safety net. They also offered me a no down payment option which is at 4.2% interest, but I believe that it is probably a bad option due to the long term interest getting more expensive. Monthly re-payments for these two scenarios are 1070$ a month and 1150$ respectively.

Normally I just throw money at index funds. I figure acquiring real estate would be really smart though, because you shouldn't "throw money away renting".

On the other hand, I don't know how many more years I want to live here, I want change in my life and I feel like I'm still young. I want to move to get more money and try something new. I feel like purchasing an apartment is going to tie me down alot and it will consume an additional 400 or so dollars of my income, meaning I'll save less, though a big part of my income will go towards paying off an asset that I will own after 25 years. Problem is the ticket price that I'm looking at is basically double due to the repayment term and interest. Buying short term to resell in a few years is probably too risky because the market is unpredictable. But on the other hand I am very employable so I know I will always have an income unless god forbid something happens. I can also potentially rent the property out to someone else after 5 years (or less if I make some arrangement with a friend). I'm not delusional and realize it won't cover mortgage taxes and other expenses but it would lessen the burden of paying a regular mortgage, though it might make it alot harder to move considering a part of my income is perpetually tied up paying off this property.

How should I make this decision? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Unexpected large HOA assessment - best option? - I've recently moved into a condo complex that I've now learned needs a lot of urgent work done. We haven't yet gotten a final figure, but it's looking like a $30k-$40k assessment may be in my near future.

My options:

* **Emergency Fund** \- I still need to leave a cushion for other sudden changes like layoffs or similar, so I don't want to do too much from here

I'm not considering a personal loan since my understanding is that that would very likely be a higher rate than the HELOAN.

I'm inclined to think that the 401(k) is best since at least the "interest" is re-invested into my retirement savings. Though the monthly payment will be higher than the HELOAN, I could make it work. I can't really come up with a good justification for the Home Equity Loan in comparison since it'd cost me *so much* in interest.

The second question would be (and this is probably just a personal comfort level thing)...how many month's worth of expenses of my cash reserves should I throw at this? Right now, my Emergency Fund is 6 months of expenses assuming no unemployment benefits. Closer to 8 with unemployment.

My wonderful supervisor recently left after nearly 15 years to take a state level job. A role directly under them is being posted, and it's come to my attention that this supervisor (strongly) wants me to apply (it's a very good fit for me, I would excel in this position and have extensive knowledge and experience in the specific role). I think I've built a great reputation, and I'm honestly very flattered in this situation.

That role is currently paying it's 4 employees in that position $74, $75, $76k, and one at $68k. I'm not sure what negotiations are like on the state level, but I'd expect/ask for at the very least 70-75k.

The job is mostly WFH (maybe 1x a week max. in office with 1hour each way commute), with potential for more travel/conference responsibilities (which is a con for me). Current commute is 15min 1x week.

My husband and I make decent money and are in a stable financial spot. We can pay our bills, own a home... However, an additional 20k would be incredible to invest a lot more/pay off my final bit of student loans, etc.

50% of take home pay on housing? - I’ve been able to rationalize this is my head but need neutral people to tell me if it’s stupid.

I’ve been renting (with my spouse) in a HCOL city for over a decade and sick of it. We want to own! But ... See More the only housing we’d ever buy would have a monthly payment of about half our take home pay.

I know it sounds bad! But we did the numbers and currently spend 25% or less of our take home every month on all expenses not including housing. So even if we use 50% on housing, we’d still have 25% or more to save.

We have the down payment, closing costs, and an emergency fund. Housing is our biggest priority in life so is it idiotic to spend half our take-home on it? I know this goes against even the most lax advice.
