Buru Energy Launches Research Agreement with CSIRO to Develop Innovative Hydrogen Exploration Technique
On 24th July 2023, 2H Resources, a wholly owned hydrogen and helium business of Buru Energy ("Buru"), executed a research agreement with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to develop a unique technique for autonomous monitoring sensors to detect natural hydrogen in real-time.
The research agreement is part of the company's quest to be a leading player in the transformation of the energy sector. The proposed autonomous monitoring sensors will detect surface occurrences of natural hydrogen similar to geochemical sampling used during mineral exploration. It is this latest development that will provide 2H Resources with added expertise and access to potential breakthrough innovation to support early exploration efforts for natural hydrogen, an essentially carbon-free energy source.
Highlights of the Agreement
Under the "Baseline study for natural hydrogen flow – long term deployment of autonomous monitoring instruments to detect natural hydrogen and other gases in soil" research agreement, 2H Resources will have access to autonomous soil gas sensors developed by CSIRO. The sensors are part of the experimental exploration workflow developed by 2H Resources to high-grade areas that are prospective for natural hydrogen to accelerate the positioning of future dedicated hydrogen exploration wells.
2H Resources already has six Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) and two Gas Storage Exploration License (GSEL) applications in South Australia that are considered highly prospective for naturally occurring hydrogen.

Buru has been confirmed as the preferred applicant for these licenses by the South Australian Government.
Thus, following the provision and deployment of the initial six monitoring units and one base station over a three-month period, the company plans larger-scale production using external manufacturing contractors to expand the deployment of up to 140 autonomous monitors to cover larger test sites over six months. Once the licenses are granted, the sensors will be deployed on selected test sites in 2H Resources' South Australian Petroleum Exploration License areas to remotely monitor the presence and movement of gases in soil, test survey design options, and data analytics strategies.
Although ownership of the monitors and the technology will remain with CSIRO, 2H Resources will be an early adopter of the newly developed monitoring technologies. This will allow the company to access the large amount of data gathered to inform its future exploration plans.
Buru's CEO, Thomas Nador, stated that the latest development involving the research agreement with CSIRO will substantially advance 2H Resources' natural hydrogen exploration program. The aim is to be part of the future of energy and not a passive observer of the transformation of the energy sector that is already underway.
In concert with the progressing of key land access agreements to support the granting of the South Australian Petroleum Exploration Licenses covering over 30,000 sq km, and commissioning an independent third-party assessment of the prospective hydrogen resource potential of these areas, the company is steadily progressing in realizing the potentially very substantial shareholder value.
This latest move by 2H Resources reinforces the company's commitment to investing in innovative hydrogen technologies to keep up with the changing global energy landscape.
