Neometals and Mercedes-Benz Embark on Pioneering LiB Recycling Venture

Neometals Ltd (ASX: NMT & AIM: NMT), an innovative battery materials recycler, announces a significant advancement in its partnership with Mercedes-Benz. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in the lithium-ion battery (LiB) recycling sector, emphasizing sustainable practices in the automotive industry.

The Groundbreaking Kuppenheim Facility

Mercedes-Benz, a leading automotive company, has entered the field of LiB recycling with its state-of-the-art facility in Kuppenheim, Germany. Aimed at reducing resource consumption, this facility underscores Mercedes' commitment to eco-friendly practices and closed-loop recycling. The plant is designed to recover essential materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt, which will be reused in the production of new Mercedes vehicles.

Partnership between Neometals and SMS group

Primobius GmbH, a 50:50 joint venture between Neometals Ltd and SMS group GmbH, is at the forefront of commercializing a patented LiB recycling process. This joint venture combines Neometals' expertise in sustainable battery materials production with SMS group's prowess in global plant manufacturing.

Fabrication and Commissioning of the Hydrometallurgical Refinery

Primobius has received a purchase order from Mercedes-Benz for approximately €18. 8M (~ A$30. 8M), marking a significant milestone. This order entails the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the hydrometallurgical refinery, known as the Hub, at Kuppenheim. This Hub is integral to the Mercedes LiB Recycling Pilot Plant, which includes both the "Mercedes Spoke" and the "Mercedes Hub. "

Primobius' Role in Meeting Industrial Scale Needs

With the successful commissioning of the Mercedes Pilot Plant, Primobius is set to significantly de-risk and scale up to an annual capacity of 21,000tpa. This expansion aligns with Mercedes-Benz's future recycling requirements and demonstrates the scalability and efficacy of Primobius' technology.

Broadening Horizons in Battery Recycling

Neometals is dedicated to sustainable processing technologies, producing critical and strategic battery materials with minimal carbon footprint. Its core business units focus on LiB recycling, lithium chemicals, and vanadium recovery, all aiming to reduce reliance on traditional mining and establish more resilient, circular supply chains.

Installation of the Spoke Plant and Hub Equipment Fabrication

Primobius has commenced the installation of the Spoke plant equipment and will begin fabricating the Hub equipment. This step is crucial for the complete integration and operational efficiency of the Kuppenheim facility.

Neometals Ltd, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and SMS group, is pioneering the path towards sustainable lithium-ion battery recycling. This venture not only promises significant environmental benefits but also positions Neometals as a leader in the circular economy of battery materials.

But semiconductor manufacturing isn’t something you can rush, it’s a complex, slow-moving process that takes years of precision and experience. Intel could recover some ground eventually, but framing them as the savior of American chipmaking feels more like a political talking point than a practical reality.
