Tesla and GM Join Forces on EV Charging, Announce NACS Transition and Supercharger Partnership
NACS stands for North American Charging Standard and it is an electric vehicle charging connector system developed and owned by Tesla, Inc. It has been used on all North American market Tesla vehicles since 2012 and was opened for use to other manufacturers in 202212. The NACS standard can support both AC charging and DC fast-charging, with up to 1,000 volts and potentially up to 1000 kW of power.
Tesla claims that the NACS connector is more compact, has no moving parts, and is twice as powerful as the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, which is the other main charging standard in North America2. Tesla also argues that NACS is the most common charging standard in North America, as NACS vehicles outnumber CCS vehicles two-to-one, and Tesla’s Supercharging network has 60% more NACS posts than all the CCS-equipped networks combined.
In November 2022, Tesla announced that it was opening its EV connector design to the world, inviting charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to put the NACS connector and charge port on their equipment and vehicles2. This means that Tesla owners can look forward to charging at other networks without adapters, and that other EV owners can look forward to charging at Tesla’s North American Supercharging and Destination Charging networks.

In June 2023, GM CEO Mary Barra announced on a TwitterSpace call that GM will transition to NACS charging in 2025. This includes a partnership allowing GM vehicles to use Tesla SuperChargers3. This is a significant move for GM, as it signals its commitment to electrification and its recognition of Tesla’s leadership in the EV market. It also benefits GM customers, as they will have access to the largest and fastest charging network in North America.
