Australian Vanadium Limited: Pioneering Vanadium Flow Battery Deployment

Australian Vanadium Limited (AVL), a leading resource company focusing on vanadium, recently announced a significant milestone in its energy storage endeavors. The much-anticipated vanadium flow battery (VFB), a project of AVL's wholly-owned subsidiary VSUN Energy, has arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia. This development marks a critical step in AVL's strategic 'pit to battery' approach, championed by Chief Executive Officer Graham Arvidson.

Collaboration with Horizon Power

The VFB, destined for a Horizon Power site in Kununurra, Western Australia, represents a collaborative effort between VSUN Energy and Horizon Power, a Western Australian utility company. This partnership underscores the growing interest in innovative energy storage solutions in the region.

Testing and Demonstration

The battery will undergo Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) at AVL’s vanadium electrolyte manufacturing facility. The 220kWh battery, capable of delivering up to 78kW of power, will showcase its versatility and efficiency through a series of tests.

These tests, conducted in collaboration with Horizon Power, aim to demonstrate the battery's potential in a variety of use cases.

Industry Engagement

During the FAT process, VSUN Energy plans to host several industry participants, offering them an opportunity to view the battery’s capabilities firsthand. This initiative is poised to generate significant interest and engagement from industry stakeholders, highlighting the practical applications of VFB technology.

Advancing the Australian Vanadium Project

AVL’s focus extends beyond just the manufacturing and deployment of VFBs. The company is actively advancing the development of its Australian Vanadium Project at Gabanintha. This project, recognized globally for its advancement, boasts a substantial resource of 239Mt at 0. 73% vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), including a high-grade zone.

Integration Strategy and VSUN Energy’s Role

AVL’s vertical integration strategy involves processing vanadium to high purity and manufacturing vanadium electrolyte. This approach is complemented by VSUN Energy’s efforts in developing projects based on renewable energy generation and VFB energy storage. Established in 2016, VSUN Energy has garnered respect for its expertise in VFB technology.

Future Prospects and Impact

The deployment of the VFB in Kununurra, following successful FAT, is anticipated to significantly contribute to the region's energy storage capabilities. AVL’s CEO, Graham Arvidson, emphasizes the role of VFBs in enabling decarbonization and providing reliable, low-cost, long-duration grid energy storage.
