Why Has Kingsrose Mining Received Approval for Drilling at the Porsanger Project?
Kingsrose Mining Gains Approval for Drilling in Norway’s Porsanger Project
January 9, 2024 - Kingsrose Mining Limited (ASX: KRM), a prominent name in the mining industry, has announced a significant advancement in its exploration endeavors. The Ministry of Trade and Fisheries of Norway has granted Kingsrose permission to conduct drilling at the Karenhaugen prospect within the Porsanger project, located in Finnmark County, Norway.
Porsanger Project: A Hub for Nickel-Copper-PGE Mineralisation
The Porsanger project is strategically situated at the northern end of two converging greenstone belts – the Karasjok and the Kautokeino Belts. These belts, extending approximately 100 kilometers, are considered highly prospective for ultramafic hosted massive sulphide nickel-copper-PGE (Platinum Group Elements) mineralisation. Notably, these belts are extensions of the Lapland Greenstone Belt in Finland, home to significant nickel-copper-PGE deposits like Kevitsa and Sakatti.
Exploration Licenses and Prospects
Kingsrose has recently staked exploration licenses over these belts, revealing numerous early-stage exploration targets. The project area includes notable ultramafic intrusions like Porsvann and Karenhaugen, where historical drilling has identified promising mineralisation.

Permit Application and Indigenous Consultations
In April 2022, Kingsrose applied for a drilling permit within the Porsanger project. The application process involved consultations with indigenous Sami rightsholders, balancing mineral exploration with the safeguarding of indigenous interests under ILO Convention 169, to which Norway is a signatory.
Conditions for Drilling
The Ministry's decision allows drilling from up to seven pad locations, with specific conditions to minimize environmental impact and involve the local reindeer herding district. Drilling is permitted between December 1 and February 15, aligning with periods of minimal reindeer activity and reduced environmental impact due to snow cover.
Kingsrose’s Approach to Responsible Exploration
Fabian Baker, the Managing Director of Kingsrose, emphasized the company's commitment to designing a responsible drilling program. This includes ongoing dialogue with reindeer herding districts and conducting Sami archaeological and biodiversity surveys.
Commencement of Drilling Operations
With a focus on responsible exploration, Kingsrose plans to commence drilling in December 2024. This approach aligns with their strategy of being a sustainability-conscious and technically proficient mineral exploration company.
